Why Your Healthcare Ads Account Got Suspended
Healthcare Google Ads accounts are usually suspended for one of three reasons: advertising a restricted category without the required certification, using prohibited claim language, or accumulating three policy strikes. Most suspensions are appealable within six months, but egregious violations are permanent.
What actually triggers a healthcare suspension
Google separates healthcare advertising into prohibited and restricted categories. Prohibited content, such as prescription opioid promotion, unauthorized pharmacies, and most speculative or experimental treatments, cannot run at all. Restricted content can run, but only after Google approves you for that specific category.
Suspensions follow a strike system for repeat violations. A first strike puts a 3-day hold on the account, a second strike a 7-day hold, and a third strike suspends the account. Egregious violations, including unauthorized pharmacy activity, skip the strike system entirely and suspend the account immediately and permanently.
Which healthcare categories require certification
Certification is the most common gap in suspended practice accounts. Owners assume that being a licensed clinic is enough. Google does not check your state license; it checks whether your account holds the platform certification that matches what you advertise.
For several categories, Google requires third-party accreditation before it will certify you. LegitScript is the primary accreditor, and its certifications are recognized across Google, Microsoft, Meta, LinkedIn, and TikTok.
- Online pharmacies and prescription drug services: Google certification plus third-party verification such as LegitScript, and registration with the relevant health authority
- Telemedicine and telehealth: LegitScript Healthcare Merchant Certification or an equivalent national license
- Addiction treatment (US): LegitScript Addiction Treatment Certification; several countries limit this category to government entities
- Health insurance (US): G2RS certification for all non-government advertisers
- Pharmaceutical manufacturers: direct Google certification, in select countries only
Claim language that gets flagged
Google prohibits ads that imply a product is as effective as prescription drugs or controlled substances, or that it prevents or treats disease without government approval. This catches wellness practices most often: supplement claims, hormone and weight loss promises, and regenerative medicine copy.
Speculative and experimental treatments are prohibited outright, with a narrow US exception for FDA-approved cell and gene therapies. If your landing page describes a therapy as cutting-edge or not yet widely approved, the ad system can read that as an experimental treatment even when the ad itself is clean. Review landing pages with the same rigor as ad copy.
How the appeal process works
Appeals start from the Contact Us link in the suspension notification inside your account, which routes to an appeal form with the relevant policy context. You receive the outcome by email, and if the appeal is rejected you can re-appeal through the same path. You have at least 6 months from the suspension date to appeal.
Fix the underlying violation before you appeal, not after. An appeal that says the suspension was a mistake, when the account lacks a required certification, will be rejected and burns one of a limited number of credible attempts. Filing excessive appeals triggers a 7-day pause on processing.
Some advertisers must complete identity verification before an appeal is accepted. If Google cannot verify identity after 3 attempts, the appeal option closes. Do not open a new account to route around a suspension; Google suspends related and successor accounts.
Preventing the next suspension
Map every service you advertise to Google's healthcare policy categories before campaigns launch, and hold the matching certification first. Certification is per category, so adding a new service line, such as telehealth or weight management medication, means a new compliance check, not just a new ad group.
Audit claim language quarterly across ads and landing pages, and document your certifications with renewal dates. Practices that treat ad compliance as part of operations rarely see a second suspension. At Rank & Rejuvenate, compliance review sits inside campaign management for exactly this reason: a suspended account books zero appointments.

Common questions
How long does a Google Ads suspension appeal take for a healthcare account?
Google does not publish a fixed review timeline. You submit the appeal through the Contact Us link in the suspension notice and receive the outcome by email. You can re-appeal a rejection, but excessive appeals trigger a 7-day processing pause, so fix the violation fully before your first submission rather than filing repeatedly.
Do I need LegitScript certification to run Google Ads for a medical practice?
It depends on what you advertise. A standard clinic promoting in-person care generally does not need it. Telemedicine providers, online pharmacies, prescription drug services, and addiction treatment providers do need LegitScript or equivalent accreditation before Google will certify them. The same LegitScript certification also qualifies you on Microsoft, Meta, LinkedIn, and TikTok.
Can a permanently suspended Google Ads account come back?
Rarely. Egregious violations, such as unauthorized pharmacy activity, carry permanent suspension, and Google states reinstatement happens only in compelling circumstances. Strike-based suspensions have a clearer path: correct the violation and appeal within the 6-month window. Opening a fresh account instead is itself a violation, since Google suspends accounts related to a suspended advertiser.
